Update: Nuclear Emergency in Japan
On March 11, 2011, a 9.0 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Pacific Ocean east of Japan’s island of Honshu. Authorities in Japan declared a nuclear emergency following the loss of power to ten nuclear reactor units in three separate nuclear power plants (Onagawa, Fukushima Daiichi and Fukiushima Daini). The cooling systems at both Daiichi and Daini experienced problems. Daiichi experienced explosions in three units (Nos. 1, 2 and 3) and a fire occurred at another unit (No. 4).

Cholera in Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with the neighbouring country of Haiti that continues to experience an outbreak of cholera. Recently, an increase in the number of suspected cholera cases, principally in the peripheral area of Santo Domingo, has been detected in the Dominican Republic. Fewer cholera cases continue to be recorded in the rest of the country.

E. coli Outbreak in Europe
There is currently a large E. coli outbreak in Europe, which has resulted in a number of deaths. Most cases are confined to northern Germany, while several have been reported in other European countries, almost exclusively in people who travelled to northern Germany. Cases linked to travel to Germany have also been reported in the United States and Canada. The majority of cases have been among adults and mainly among females.

Travel Health Notice - Polio in Angola and Tajikistan
The Ministry of Health in Angola has reported 20 cases of polio since the beginning of 2010. Cases have been reported from previously polio-free provinces of Bie, Bengo, Huambo, Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul, and Uige. Transmission has spread to the neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo, which has reported seven cases of polio for 2010.
